It can be very rewarding to learn how to draw a desert.

Drawing a Desert
Step 1:
Drawing an entire desert might seem daunting, but we’ll make it easier for you by breaking it down in this guide on how to draw a desert. For this first step, we will focus on the horizon line and the blazing sun on the desert. We will use curved lines for the horizon line to show the dunes in the desert.
Near the right side of the desert, there will be a line a little sharper than the others to show how the wind blew the sand at an angle. Then you can finish by drawing a circle for a rising (or setting) sun over the desert. With all these features removed, we can carry on to dance 2.
Step 2:
Now that you have the outline of your desert drawing, we can start adding some details to it in this step. We will mainly focus on adding curved and rounded lines from and below the horizon line. The reference image will show you how to place these lines for the realistic placement of these dunes.
Step 3:
This dessert already looks great! We will continue to add it in this stage of our direction on drawing a desert. To do this, we’ll mainly use a few extra lines to extend what you drew in the previous step further down the image.
If you have a nice big sheet of paper, you can expand it further and draw more dunes taking what you’ve learned to create an even bigger dessert. For the next steps, we will leave the dunes and focus on the sky above the desert.
Step 4:
The sky above a desert will often be a sight to behold as the sun catches the swirling sands and the heat waves pulsate. We will draw this amazing horizon in this part of your desert drawing. We’ll draw layers of curved lines over the desert to do this. The curved lines we’ll use for the sky will be quite different from the ones you drew for the dunes, as they’ll be a bit flatter.
These lines may look simple, but they will make an amazing desert backdrop. They’ll look especially cool once we’ve colored them in the final step, but first, we have a few final details to add in the next step.
Step 5:

In this step of our guide on drawing a desert, we will cover some final details. The main thing we’ll add will be birds flying to the left of the sun, and this simple detail will help create an atmospheric scene for the image. Then, with those birds added, you are done with the steps in this guide! You don’t have to stop here, as you can also add some finishing touches on your own.
There are many options you could opt for! Maybe you could change the weather, add a sandstorm, or draw fearless camels walking through the desert. These are just a few ideas, but dessert has so many possibilities! Make sure to get creative and take the opportunity to see what happens.
Step 6:

For this last part of your desert drawing, we will end up with some great colors for this amazing desert. Our reference image used different colors, such as yellows, oranges, browns, and blues. However, these are just a few colors you can choose from, and you should feel free to use any color you like for your design.
Then you can decide how you will bring those colors to life! You can keep the colors vibrant using acrylic paints, colored pens, or markers, keep them more subtle with watercolors and colored pencils, or a combination of both. It’s up to you, and we can’t wait to see what cool colors and artistic tools you’ll use to bring this image to life.
Create your desert drawing to the next level
No need to get lost following these tips we have for your desert sketch! A desert is not a place where one would like to get lost. Despite this, adding a human character to this drawing of a desert could be interesting. Since we have such a wide view of the desert, the person would probably look quite small in the grand scheme. It could also include details like a trail of footprints behind the person. You can also add people if you don’t want them to be alone! In this image, we see birds flying. You can also fill the image by adding animals as well.
Some would make obvious choices for the scene. For example, some camels crossing the desert would be a great choice. It would also work well if you decided to add humans, as we suggested in the previous step. Some horses or maybe other birds would be other animals you could add. Adding more features to the landscape would be another way to modify this desert design. For instance, you could form an oasis in the desert. It could be done by adding a small lake with palm trees and grass. Again, this would work well if you decided to add a few more characters to the image.
They would certainly be very happy to see this oasis if they did! The color palette we used for this sketch of the desert looks great, but you can also use additional colors and artistic mediums to make it even better. For example, you can remove the elements of blue and opt for other warm colors to make it a searing image. Or you can reach the additional way and have cooler colors for a bit of contrast. Spreading a thin layer of glue over the desert and dusting it with sand would be a great way to give the image a grainy texture.
